The Tata Management Training Centre (TMTC) was founded in 1959, by Mr.JRD Tata, the fourth chairman of the Tata Group, and moved into its’ present location on January 6, 1966. Its’ mandate was to serve as an educational institution that would assist, foster, cultivate and contribute to the development of professional management for the economic development of the country.
TMTC is the learning and development arm of the Tata Group's Human Resources organization. With a strong internal faculty, research and support team; linkages with renowned national and international institutions; and four decades of experience in fostering and nurturing leadership, it is one of the most respected leadership development institutions in India today.
The Centre is housed in a gracious heritage structure, designed by renowned architect George Wittet (architect of famous structures like Gateway of India), on rambling grounds surrounded by leafy trees, lawns, pathways and flower beds. Much of the original layout remains the same. TMTC’s sylvan surroundings, and atmosphere of serenity, provide participants’ an excellent environment in which to engage with the intellectual rigor offered by the developmental interventions they attend here; and allow them to reflect on the different facets of their management roles from a perspective unencumbered by daily distractions.
Over the years, TMTC'S unyielding commitment to being the learning partner of choice for organizations across the corporate as well as non-corporate sector has earned it much respect and recognition. In 2009, TMTC was awarded the 'Golden Peacock National Training Award for 2007-08' in the field of Training & Development, by a panel headed by Mr. N Bhagvati, the former Chief Justice of India. The award is instituted by the Institute of Directors.
The hallowed arches of TMTC have witnessed the infusion of fresh talent, and nurtured it, every year since the first TAS batch of 25 students in the year 1972. More than 50,000 senior & junior executives from more than 9,000 Tata & non-Tata companies have participated in our programmes over the years. TMTC designs and delivers world-class leadership development interventions, with faculty drawn from among the world’s premier institutions including Harvard Business School, Michigan University, Wharton School, and the Centre for Creative Leadership. Thought leaders, management gurus and experts such as Prof. C. K. Prahalad, Prof. Krishna Palepu, Dr. Ram Charan, Chris Bonington, Dr. Pankaj Ghemawat, Dr. Vijay Govindrajan, Dr. Curt Coffman, Navi Radjou, and Dr. Jochen Wirtz have often graced our classrooms.
TMTC works with individual companies to create high-impact learning experiences tailored to their unique needs. In a rapidly changing business scenario, where organizations face shifting market dynamics, aggressive competitors, demanding and discerning customers, and multiple strategic challenges, our customized interventions help grow leaders who are able to address company-specific, live challenges and issues.
TMTC offers customized programmes for enhancing both functional skills, as well as general management capabilities. We thus offer interventions that add value in the functional areas of Strategy, Operations, Innovation, Markets and Customers, Finance, and Diversity, as well as those that build leadership capability.
These engagements foster mutually beneficial learning partnerships. For organizations, it is an opportunity to gain exposure to applied research by TMTC faculty,in addition to a contextual and relevant developmental intervention. For TMTC faculty, the close interaction with the company provides deeper insights in to emergent issues that expand our applied research agenda, and provides new case development opportunities that feed back into our programmes.
With more than five decades of experience in Executive Education, TMTC provides world class programmes that build the leadership pipeline in organizations.
