Our History

The Tata Management Training Centre (TMTC) was founded in 1959, by Mr.JRD Tata, the fourth chairman of the Tata Group, and moved into its’ present location on January 6, 1966. Its’ mandate was to serve as an educational institution that would assist, foster, cultivate and contribute to the development of professional management for the economic development of the country.

Who We Are

TMTC is the learning and development arm of the Tata Group's Human Resources organization. With a strong internal faculty, research and support team; linkages with renowned national and international institutions; and four decades of experience in fostering and nurturing leadership, it is one of the most respected leadership development institutions in India today.

The Facility

The  Centre is  housed  in  a  gracious  heritage  structure, designed by renowned architect George Wittet (architect of famous structures like Gateway of India), on rambling grounds surrounded by leafy trees, lawns, pathways and flower  beds.  Much of the original layout remains the same. TMTC’s sylvan surroundings, and atmosphere of serenity, provide participants’ an excellent environment in which to engage with the intellectual rigor offered by the developmental interventions they attend here;  and  allow them to reflect on the different facets of their management roles from a perspective unencumbered by daily distractions.

Our Vision

To help develop Leaders for the Tata Group

Our Mission

To facilitate the development of leaders, amongst capable managers, across all levels and functions, through the dissemination of modern management practices, and by harnessing Tata group wisdom, in order to enable all Tata Group companies to realize the potential of their human capital.

Our Values

We affirm the core values of the Tata Group – integrity; understanding; excellence; unity; responsibility - and the guiding principles of TMTC's founder, Mr. JRD Tata -

  • “Nothing worthwhile is ever achieved without deep thought and hard work”
  • “One must think for oneself and never accept at their face value slogans and catch phrases to which, unfortunately, our people are too easily susceptible”
  • “One must forever strive for excellence, or even perfection, in any task however small, and never be satisfied with the second best”
  • “No success or achievement in material terms is worthwhile unless it serves the needs or interests of the country and its people and is achieved by fair and honest means”
  • “Good human relations not only bring great personal rewards but also are essential to the success of any enterprise”.
